Wildlife Watching

Watch for wildlife across Big Bear's forests, meadows and shoreline, where sightings are common but never scheduled.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Year-Round

Overview

What to Expect

Wildlife is part of everyday life around Big Bear, but it is not a zoo experience and there is no single place where animals reliably appear on command. The surrounding forest, meadows, shoreline and open spaces support deer, coyotes, bald eagles, bobcats, black bears, mountain lions and many smaller animals and birds. You may see deer while driving to breakfast, an eagle crossing the lake or nothing at all during a dedicated wildlife outing. The best approach is to choose good habitat, slow down and watch from a distance rather than trying to chase a sighting.

Highlights

What Makes It Special

Highlights

Different habitats produce different sightings. The lake, marshes, meadows and forest all support wildlife, and season and time of day can change what is active.

Best season

Best Season

The Best Time to Go

Wildlife can be seen year-round. Early and quieter parts of the day can be productive, but there is no guaranteed hour. Winter is particularly associated with bald eagles around the lake, while other species may be more noticeable in different habitats and seasons.

Planning

Plan Your Visit

Bring binoculars or a telephoto lens instead of relying on close access. Keep dogs controlled, never feed wildlife and secure food and trash at cabins and campsites. If you see a bear, coyote or other large animal, give it space and never position yourself between an animal and its route of travel. Remember that wildlife can also be on the road, especially around dawn, dusk and quieter residential areas.

Local Tip

If cars are stopped or people are gathered around an animal, do not assume getting closer is okay because everyone else is doing it. Stay back and let the animal move freely.

Parking and Access

Getting There

Use legal public parks, trails, forest areas and shoreline access. Do not stop in travel lanes or trespass onto private property for a sighting. If wildlife appears while you are driving, pull completely into a legal parking area before watching or photographing it.
