Snowshoeing
Winter
Overview
What to Expect
Snowshoeing is one of Big Bear's best non-resort winter activities when the conditions line up. It lets you move through snow-covered National Forest terrain without a lift ticket, but it should not be treated as ordinary hiking with different shoes. Fresh snow can hide rocks, trail edges and navigation cues; deep snow can make a short route exhausting; packed snow may be better suited to traction devices than snowshoes; and an easy summer trail can become a serious winter outing. The first decision is not which trail looks prettiest—it is whether current snow, access and weather make that route appropriate at all.

What Makes It Special
Best Season
The Best Time to Go
There is no reliable date range that guarantees snowshoeing in Big Bear. The best window is after enough natural snow has accumulated to cover the route and after roads and trailhead access are safe. Conditions can shift from powder to packed snow, ice, slush or bare ground quickly because of strong sun and changing temperatures. A storm day is not automatically the best day to go—sometimes the better outing is a day later, after roads are cleared and you can safely reach the trail.

Local Tip
The biggest mistake is choosing the snow before choosing the parking. After a storm, visitors often drive toward the deepest-looking snow and only then discover the trailhead or shoulder is not safely accessible. Pick a route you can legally reach and park at first. A slightly lower trail with safe access can make a far better day than perfect snow at a trailhead you cannot responsibly reach.
