Cross-Country Skiing

Winter

Overview

What to Expect

Cross-country skiing exists in Big Bear, but visitors should understand what they are planning for. This is not a destination with a large, reliably groomed Nordic trail system. Instead, suitable National Forest roads and routes can become skiable when natural snowfall provides enough coverage. That makes snow depth, surface conditions and access more important than the date of your trip.

The Best Time to Go

Cross-country skiing is possible during winter periods with enough natural snowfall to cover suitable routes. There is no fixed season that guarantees good Nordic conditions, and warm sun after a storm can change coverage quickly.

Plan Your Visit

Local Tip

This is one activity I would not build an entire Big Bear trip around weeks in advance. If you already have a winter trip planned and a good natural snow cycle lines up, cross-country skiing can be excellent. If coverage is marginal, switch to snowshoeing rather than forcing the plan.
