Paddleboarding

Explore Big Bear Lake by stand-up paddleboard, with local rentals and launch access for properly permitted private boards.

Spring, Summer, Fall

Overview

What to Expect

Paddleboarding looks easy from shore, but Big Bear Lake's wind makes location and timing especially important. On a calm morning, a SUP can be an easy way to stay near the shoreline and explore at your own pace. Once wind builds across the lake, standing up and making progress back toward your launch can become much harder. Rentals are available locally, and private boards need a lake-use permit and inspection.

What Makes It Special

Highlights

Calm mornings and quieter shoreline areas are best for learning. Both rigid and inflatable private SUPs require a lake-use permit and inspection.

The Best Time to Go

Earlier is usually better. Big Bear's afternoon wind can turn an easy paddle into a tiring return trip, particularly on a stand-up board. Pick a calm forecast and use the morning when possible rather than choosing your time only around the warmest air temperature.

Planning

Plan Your Visit

Use a calm forecast and go early when possible. Wind can make the return trip much harder than the outbound paddle. Wear appropriate flotation and account for cold mountain water even on warm days.

Local Tip

The mistake first-time paddlers make is going too far while the water is calm and forgetting they still have to get back. Stay closer to your launch until you know what the wind is doing—especially if it is forecast to increase later in the day.
