The Experience

What to Expect

The Bark Park itself is fully fenced and separated into designated small-dog and large-dog sections to help create a more comfortable experience for different breeds and energy levels.

Inside the fenced areas, visitors will find:

  • Benches
  • Waste bag stations
  • Open running space
  • Sandy dirt surfaces
  • Shade from surrounding trees depending on the time of day

The surface is primarily dirt and sand rather than grass, which is common for mountain dog parks. During spring snowmelt or after storms, muddy conditions are fairly common, so many locals keep towels in the car for cleanup afterward.

Outside the fenced dog area, Meadow Park offers:

  • Open grassy space
  • Lake views
  • Walking paths
  • Tennis courts
  • Basketball courts
  • Easy picnic areas

The atmosphere tends to be friendly and social, especially during summer afternoons and weekends when many visitors and locals bring their dogs to exercise and meet other pet owners.

Friday evenings can become particularly active because of the nearby Big Bear Farmers Market during warmer months.

Location & parking

Getting There & Parking Tips

Bark Park is located at Meadow Park near Ski Beach along Park Avenue, close to the southern shore of Big Bear Lake. The park sits conveniently between The Village and Moonridge, making it easy to reach from most parts of town.

Visitors coming from Big Bear Boulevard can access the area by turning onto Jeffries Road near Grizzly Manor Cafe and continuing toward Park Avenue.

There is a large dedicated parking lot serving Meadow Park and Bark Park, but availability changes significantly depending on:

  • Summer weekends
  • Sunset hours
  • Farmers Market Fridays
  • Holiday periods

Legal street parking is often available nearby when the main lot fills up.

Local Parking TIp

Friday Farmers Market evenings can make the main parking lot surprisingly congested. Parking along Park Avenue and walking into the park is often much easier than trying to navigate the crowded lot.

Seasons & Crowds

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Bark Park is usually earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during summer when the midday sun can make the dirt surface warmer and the park busier. Weekday visits are usually calmer, while Friday evenings can be more crowded because of nearby Farmers Market activity.

Winter

Winter visits can vary dramatically depending on snow conditions. Fresh snow creates beautiful scenery, but icy surfaces and muddy conditions are common during warmer afternoons or snowmelt periods. Some dogs love playing in the snow, while others may struggle with colder temperatures and wet conditions.

Spring

Spring brings cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, but melting snow can create muddy conditions inside the fenced dog areas. This is one of the greener times of year around Meadow Park, and lake views are often especially nice after winter storms clear.

Summer

Summer is the busiest season at Bark Park. Longer daylight hours, warm weather, and nearby lake activity bring steady traffic throughout the day. Early mornings and evenings are usually the most comfortable times for dogs, especially during hotter afternoons.

Friday evenings from spring through fall are especially lively because of the nearby Farmers Market.

Fall

Fall is one of the best overall times to visit. Cooler temperatures make the park more comfortable for dogs, crowds are often lighter than summer, and the surrounding trees begin showing seasonal color.

Local Tips

Know Before You Go

Bark Park is one of the easiest places in Big Bear Lake to visit with dogs, but weather, altitude, and busy weekends can affect the experience more than many visitors expect.

Bring Towels for Muddy Conditions

The fenced areas use sandy dirt surfaces that can become muddy after storms, snowmelt, or heavy use.

Watch for Wildlife Near Dusk

Coyotes and other wildlife occasionally move through the Meadow Park area during quieter evening hours. Staying alert and avoiding late-night visits is recommended.

Use Caution Near the Lake

Dogs should remain leashed near shoreline areas outside the fenced park, especially near Ski Beach and the quieter sandy access points around Meadow Park.

Overview

About Bark Park

Big Bear Bark Park is more than just a fenced dog park. Located within the larger Meadow Park area near the lake, it gives visitors a mix of off-leash recreation, open green space, shoreline access, and some surprisingly scenic lake views.

For many visitors traveling with dogs, Bark Park becomes one of the easiest places in town to let pets safely burn energy after long car rides, busy weekends, or cabin downtime. The location also makes it convenient to combine with nearby restaurants, walks, or lake activities.

Unlike many small mountain dog parks, the setting here feels much more open. Meadow Park surrounds the fenced areas with grassy fields, sports courts, walking paths, and shoreline access that create a larger recreation area rather than just a single fenced enclosure.

Local Favorite

One of the lesser-known features of Bark Park is the nearby shoreline access hidden past the shrubs near the edge of Meadow Park. While dogs should remain leashed near the lake, it is a peaceful spot to sit by the water away from some of the heavier crowds found elsewhere around Big Bear Lake.

Dog Friendly

Bark Park is built for dogs, with fenced off-leash areas plus nearby leashed walking space around Meadow Park and the lake.
