Birdwatching

Explore lake, marsh, meadow and pine-forest habitats that make Big Bear rewarding for birdwatching year-round.

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, Year-Round

Overview

What to Expect

Birdwatching in Big Bear becomes much more interesting once you stop thinking of the valley as one habitat. The lake edge attracts different birds than Stanfield Marsh, open meadow areas or higher pine forest, and migration changes what is present through the year. Winter receives the most attention because of bald eagles, but that is only one part of the local birdlife. A visitor can spend an easy morning with binoculars near the lake or make birding part of a hike rather than building the entire day around it.

Highlights

What Makes It Special

Highlights

Big Bear combines lake, marsh, meadow and forest habitat in a relatively compact valley, so changing locations can produce very different species without a long drive.

Best season

Best Season

The Best Time to Go

Birding is possible year-round. Morning is often productive because birds are active and popular areas are quieter. Winter is the season most associated with bald eagles, while migration and nesting seasons bring different opportunities during the rest of the year.

Planning

Plan Your Visit

Bring binoculars and use a birding app or field guide if identification matters to you. Keep voices low, stay on legal public access and give nests substantial space. A telephoto lens is far better than approaching a bird for a phone photo. If you are specifically looking for eagles, plan for patient long-distance viewing rather than expecting a close encounter.

Local Tip

Pick one habitat and give it time. Twenty quiet minutes with binoculars in the right place can reveal more than driving continuously around the valley trying to check off locations.

Parking and Access

Getting There

Stanfield Marsh, public shoreline areas and established National Forest trails provide different types of access. Park only in designated or legal areas and respect seasonal wildlife closures. Do not block roads or private driveways because birds are visible from a particular spot.
