Kayaking
Paddle Big Bear Lake’s shoreline and quieter coves, with rentals available and public launch access for properly permitted private kayaks.
Spring, Summer, Fall
Overview
What to Expect
Kayaking in Big Bear is less about trying to cover the entire lake and more about choosing the right part of it to explore. Staying closer to the shoreline and protected coves gives you a very different experience from paddling across open water with motorized boat traffic. Rentals are available around the lake, or you can bring your own kayak after completing Big Bear Lake's permit and inspection requirements.
Highlights
What Makes It Special
Calm mornings and protected shoreline areas are the easiest introduction. Rentals simplify logistics; private kayaks require a lake-use permit and invasive-species inspection.
Best Season
The Best Time to Go
Morning is often the better window for kayaking in Big Bear. The lake can be relatively calm early and noticeably choppier once the typical afternoon wind develops. Spring through early fall is the main paddling season, but wind and weather matter more to a small kayak than the temperature shown on your phone.
Planning
Plan Your Visit
Go earlier when possible because afternoon wind can make the return much harder. Wear a life jacket, plan around cold water and boat traffic, and stay within your ability rather than making an open-water crossing the goal.
Local Tip
If you are new to kayaking, don't make crossing the lake the goal. Start in a quieter bay or stay along the shoreline where you can get comfortable with the wind and boat traffic first. A glassy morning can become a much harder paddle by afternoon.
Parking and Access
Getting There
Rentals launch from established operators. Private kayaks can use operating public launch facilities after permit and inspection requirements are completed. Choose the launch around the area you actually want to paddle.
