Road Cycling

Ride high-elevation roads, challenging climbs or the easier paved Alpine Pedal Path along Big Bear Lake’s north shore.

Spring, Summer, Fall

Overview

What to Expect

Cycling in Big Bear can be as easy as a paved ride along the north shore or as serious as a high-elevation training day with long mountain climbs. Those should not be treated as the same activity. The Alpine Pedal Path works for visitors who want scenery and a casual ride, while experienced road cyclists come to Big Bear specifically for altitude, climbing and routes associated with major cycling events.

Highlights

What Makes It Special

Highlights

Choose between relaxed paved riding and serious high-elevation road cycling. The Alpine Pedal Path is the easy recreational option; longer valley and mountain routes involve traffic, climbing and altitude.

Best season

Best Season

The Best Time to Go

Late spring through fall generally provides the most reliable conditions. On summer days, riding early helps avoid stronger afternoon sun, changing weather and heavier recreational traffic. Shoulder seasons can be excellent but require checking for cold temperatures or lingering winter conditions.

Planning

Plan Your Visit

Study elevation and road exposure before longer rides. Summer mornings are generally more comfortable, and shoulder seasons require checking for cold or lingering winter conditions. Carry water, repair supplies and visibility gear.

Local Tip

If someone in your group says they want to 'bike around the lake,' clarify the plan. There is not one continuous protected bike path circling Big Bear Lake. The Alpine Pedal Path is the easy recreational option; a true road ride around the valley puts you on regular roads with traffic and elevation changes.

Parking and Access

Getting There

Access depends on the route. The Alpine Pedal Path has north-shore access points, while road rides may begin elsewhere in the valley. Do not assume a full loop around the lake is a protected bike path—much of it uses regular roads.
