If you’ve seen a postcard of Big Bear Lake, chances are you were looking at Boulder Bay Park. Known for the dramatic rock formations rising out of the water and its serene, park-like atmosphere, it is a "must-visit" for anyone coming to the mountains.
Whether you are looking to launch a kayak, take a family photo, or find a scenic spot for your pup, here is everything you need to know about visiting Boulder Bay.
Getting There & The Parking Reality
Boulder Bay Park is located about two miles west of The Village on Big Bear Blvd.
- Parking: The park has its own dedicated parking lot, which is a huge plus. However, because this is one of the most popular spots in town, the lot fills up fast.
- Tip: On weekends, holidays, and right before sunset, expect the lot to be packed. If you’re planning a sunset visit, arrive early to secure a spot.

What to Do at Boulder Bay
The park features a lush grassy area and a beautiful paved trail that winds through the grounds. It’s an easy, flat walk that is perfect for all ages.
- The Iconic "Bear" Photo: You can’t leave without a picture in front of the large, intricately wood-carved bear near the entrance. It’s the quintessential Big Bear souvenir photo.
- Bird Watching & Eagles: Keep your eyes on the trees growing from the boulders in the center of the bay. This area is famous for bird watching; lucky visitors often spot Bald Eagles perched on the rocks or in the surrounding pines.
- Picnics: There is a covered picnic area with tables, though they are limited. These are "first-come, first-served," so bring a blanket just in case you need to set up on the grass.
- The "Secret" Beach: Behind the picnic area, you’ll find a small sandy beach. While
swimming is not allowed here, it’s a peaceful place to sit by the water and enjoy the view of the bay.

Water Access: Kayaking & The Dock
Boulder Bay is one of the best places on the lake for human-powered watercraft.
- Kayaking: There is a kayak rental shop located right next to the park. Because pontoon boats are required to maintain a very low speed (no-wake zone) within the bay, the water stays calm—making it the safest and most relaxing place for beginners to paddle.
- The Fishing Dock: There is a seasonal dock ramp that, when open, allows you to walk further out over the water for a better view of the boulders or to cast a fishing line.
Is Boulder Bay Dog-Friendly?
Absolutely! Boulder Bay is a favorite for four-legged visitors. The park provides dog waste stations to help keep the area clean.
- Walking: The paved path is perfect for a scenic stroll with your pup.
- Swimming: While people can't swim at the park beach, your dog can get their paws wet along the shoreline. For more tips on taking your pet around town, check out our Complete Guide to Dog-Friendly Big Bear Lake.
Essential Visitor Tips
- Hours: The park is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Note that there are no lights at night, so plan to head out shortly after the sun goes down.
- Facilities: Public bathrooms are available on-site.
- Wildlife Safety: You are in the mountains! While the park is popular, always stay aware of your surroundings. Coyotes are common in the area, and while rare, bear sightings can happen. Always keep your trash in the bin and your dog on a leash.
- Sunset: This is arguably the best spot in the valley to watch the sun dip behind the mountains. The way the light hits the boulders is something you don't want to miss.
