By Discover Big Bear Lake October 21, 2025

About the Drive

Looking for a countryside escape from Big Bear Lake? Oak Glen makes an unforgettable day trip — especially during fall apple season! Just about 40 miles (1.5 hours) from Big Bear via Highway 38, this historic mountain community is famous for its apple orchards, rolling hills, and farm-fresh treats.

The drive itself is part of the adventure, winding through the San Bernardino National Forest before descending into the fertile valleys of apple country. Expect crisp air, scenic overlooks, and a refreshing change of pace. Whether you visit in autumn for harvest season or off-season for peaceful walks and open views, Oak Glen is a wonderful way to experience a different side of the mountains.

Driving Directions — The Big Bear Lake Loop

Route: From Big Bear Lake, take CA-38 West through Angelus Oaks toward Oak Glen. The drive is roughly 40 miles and takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, depending on traffic and stops.

Driving note: The highway is curvy with steep grades — take your time and enjoy the scenery.

Traffic tip: During apple season (September – November), weekends can get busy. Plan to arrive before 10 a.m. or visit mid-week for lighter crowds.

Alternative route: If you want to vary the scenery, return via CA-18 through Lucerne Valley for a longer desert-view drive.

  • Please note that as of October 2025, Highway 38 is closed due to mudslides. Please use an alternative route.
