You might recognize the name – this scenic route is the very path you likely took if you drove up to Big Bear from Southern California. But the Byway stretches far beyond the main artery, offering breathtaking vistas and hidden gems just waiting to be explored. Today, we're taking you on a short but spectacular detour along the Rim of the World Byway, perfect for a relaxed afternoon with jaw-dropping mountain views. So buckle up and get ready to discover a whole new side of Big Bear!

Overview of the Drive

The Rim of the World Scenic Byway carves a path for 107 miles through the heart of California's San Bernardino National Forest. Winding its way from near Cajon Pass to the edge of Mill Creek Canyon, the route incorporates three state highways: California State Routes 138, 18, and 38.

This scenic drive promises a visual feast for travelers, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscapes.

Places to Stop Along the Way

Green Valley Lake: Nestled roughly halfway along the byway, discover the serenity of Green Valley Lake. This quaint alpine community boasts picturesque scenery, making it the perfect spot for a relaxing lakeside picnic or a leisurely stroll along the water's edge.

Lake Arrowhead Village: As you approach the byway's conclusion, consider a delightful detour to Lake Arrowhead Village. Bustling with shops and restaurants, this vibrant area offers stunning views of Lake Arrowhead as a backdrop. It's the ideal place to unwind, grab a delicious meal, and maybe indulge in some retail therapy.

Keller Peak Lookout Tower:  Reaching the pinnacle of your journey, both figuratively and literally, is the awe-inspiring Keller Peak Lookout Tower. Standing tall at an elevation of approximately 7,800 feet, this iconic landmark offers unparalleled 180-degree panoramic vistas. On days blessed with clear skies, prepare to be mesmerized by the sprawling Inland Empire on one side and the vast wilderness on the other.

Getting There: Traveling on State Route 18 (SR-18), head east from Running Springs. Shortly after passing the Deerlick Fire Station, turn right onto Keller Peak Road (Forest Road 1N96). This well-maintained, paved road winds for 5 miles, leading you directly to the lookout point. Be sure to turn right at the fork in the road to continue towards the lookout.

With charming towns, hidden lakes, and panoramic vistas, this adventure promises an unforgettable escape. So buckle up and get ready to discover the magic of Southern California's mountains.
