Castle Rock Trail: Big Bear Lake's Scenic Challenge with a Touch of Adventure

Calling all hikers looking for a quick and rewarding challenge near Big Bear Lake! The Castle Rock Trail delivers breathtaking views with a moderate climb that won't disappoint.

Conquer this 2.7 mile out and back, moderately challenged hike with a 500ft elevation gain to see panoramic views of Big Bear Lake.

Castle Rock Trail Overview

Finding the Trailhead

  • Location: Look for the trailhead near Boulder Bay in Big Bear Lake, accessible from Big Bear Blvd at approximately mile marker 45. Since there is not a designated parking lot, you must find a spot along the road. There is a small turnout that fits a few cars.

  • Parking Note: Parking is limited, especially on busy weekends and during peak seasons. Be sure to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot.

The Hike

  • Distance: Conquer a manageable 2.7 miles out-and-back.

  • Difficulty: Moderate - Prepare for a workout, especially in the first half where the trail gets steep.

  • Elevation Gain: 500 feet - This climb will get your heart pumping, but the payoff is worth it.

What to Expect

  • The hike begins with a one-mile ascent along a well-marked trail.
  • Enjoy the cool shade of majestic trees as you make your way up.
  • A halfway point with benches offers a chance to rest and appreciate a peek-a-boo view of the lake through the trees.

Rocky Terrain

  • As you progress, the trail becomes less defined and transitions to a flat, rocky terrain.
  • Navigate this section with care; a GPS track is recommended to avoid wrong turns.
  • Keep your eyes peeled for Castle Rock, a towering beacon visible above the treetops, guiding your way.

Reaching the Summit

  • Upon reaching the base of Castle Rock, the landscape changes dramatically.
  • You'll have a choice between a challenging scramble up the backside or a somewhat safer ascent on the front side, both requiring some scrambling ability.
  • The reward for reaching the top is a panoramic view of the lake and city sprawling below, making the effort absolutely worthwhile.

Descent and Dog Caution:

  • Descending requires caution, particularly on the trickier sections, ensuring a safe return.
  • Important Note for Dog Owners: While most of the trail is manageable for leashed dogs, some parts involve scrambling, especially at the end. Dogs will not be able to climb the final part of the Castle Rock Trail.

Overall, the Castle Rock hike offers a balance of physical activity and scenic beauty suitable for various skill levels. From the serene forested trails to the exhilarating views at the summit, this adventure is an excellent addition to your Big Bear itinerary.
