Where to Stay in Big Bear Lake: A Guide to the Best Areas

By Discover Big Bear Lake October 24, 2025

Overview

Big Bear Lake may be a small mountain town, but each area around the lake has its own unique personality — from walkable downtown charm to peaceful forest cabins.

Whether you’re visiting for skiing, lake days, or a relaxing escape, knowing the layout of the town can help you choose the perfect place to stay.

  • Here’s a breakdown of the main areas around Big Bear Lake — what they’re known for, what’s nearby, and who they’re best suited for.

1. The Village

If you want to be close to everything, The Village is the heart of Big Bear Lake. This lively area is home to most of the restaurants, shops, and nightlife in town, and it’s one of the few places where you can walk almost everywhere.

Staying here means you’re within minutes of Snow Summit, the lake marinas, and the trolley routes that connect to other parts of town. The Village is especially popular in winter for ski weekends and in summer for events, markets, and live music.

Best for: Visitors who want convenience, walkability, and access to dining and entertainment.

2. Moonridge:

Located on the south side of the lake, Moonridge is slightly farther from The Village but closer to Bear Mountain Resort, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, and the Big Bear Golf Course.

The area has been beautifully revitalized in recent years, with new roundabouts, sidewalks, and the paved Rathbun Creek Trail that winds past coffee shops, restaurants, and small local businesses. Moonridge offers a quieter, more residential mountain feel — with easy access to skiing, snow play areas, and hiking trails.

The deeper you go into Moonridge, the higher up you’ll be. This means amazing mountain views and that true alpine atmosphere, but keep in mind that in winter, some steep driveways and roads can be tricky when covered in snow or ice.

Best for: Families, skiers, and anyone who wants a relaxed stay close to Bear Mountain and the zoo.

3. By the Lake (Boulder Bay to Eagle Point)

The central lake area — which includes Boulder Bay, Metcalf Bay, to Eagle Point — is ideal for visitors who want to stay right by the water. You’ll find a mix of lakefront cabins, cozy lodges, and a few hotels with beautiful views.

This area still feels central, giving you quick access to parks, marinas, and The Village, yet it has a calmer, more scenic vibe. Boulder Bay Park is perfect for morning walks with coffee or evening picnics by the lake.

The only downside is that traffic can get congested around the main road on busy weekends. Still, it’s one of the most beautiful and convenient places to stay for a true “by the lake” experience.

Best for: Visitors who want lake views, easy access to the water, and a balance of beauty and convenience.

 4. Fawnskin

Across the lake on the north shore, Fawnskin is Big Bear’s quiet side — peaceful, local, and less developed than the main resort areas. It’s the best place to go if you’re looking for tranquility and space.

There are no hotels, and the town’s only restaurant is currently closed, but you’ll find charming cabins with stunning views of the lake, often at lower prices than comparable spots on the south shore.

Fawnskin is ideal for those who don’t mind a short drive (about 10–15 minutes) around the lake to reach restaurants or ski resorts. It’s a favorite for writers, couples, and anyone who wants to unwind in nature.

Best for: Visitors seeking peace, privacy, and lake views away from the crowds.

5. Big Bear City

Technically a separate community east of Big Bear Lake, Big Bear City offers a different vibe — more local and residential, with fewer tourist amenities.

You won’t find the same number of restaurants or attractions nearby, and it’s a bit farther from the ski resorts, but you’ll typically find better rental prices, especially on busy holiday weekends.

Neighborhoods like Sugarloaf and Erwin Lake still have that cozy mountain feel, surrounded by tall pines and quiet streets.

Big Bear City is great if you don’t mind driving 10–15 minutes into town for dining or skiing, and it’s especially appealing for long-term stays or travelers on a budget.

Best for: Budget-conscious visitors, remote workers, and those wanting a quieter, local experience.

Final Thoughts

Each area of Big Bear Lake offers something unique — whether you’re after walkability, lake access, skiing, or solitude.

  • Stay in The Village for dining and convenience.
  • Choose Moonridge for skiing and a relaxed mountain setting.
  • Pick The Lake for lake views and easy access to parks and marinas.
  • Head to Fawnskin for peace and quiet.
  • Or consider Big Bear City for affordability and a more local feel.

No matter where you stay, you’ll be surrounded by fresh air, pine trees, and the laid-back charm that makes Big Bear Lake one of California’s favorite mountain escapes.
