The History of Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake

Oktoberfest is a world-famous Bavarian beer festival held annually in Munich, Germany, featuring a vibrant blend of traditional Bavarian culture, music, food, and an array of beer tents serving authentic brews. It's a lively celebration that draws visitors from around the globe, offering an unforgettable experience steeped in Bavarian heritage and hospitality.
Modeled after the world-renowned event in Munich, the Oktoberfest celebration in Big Bear Lake has a rich history dating back to 1971!  The festival was started by Hans and Erika Bandows, German immigrants who wanted to bring a taste of their homeland to Southern California. The Bandows had purchased the Wawona Lodge, later to become the Wolf Creek Lodge and now known as the Sessions Retreat and Hotel , held a celebration to thank their guests and friends. What began as a small gathering at their lodge, has now grown into a beloved annual tradition that attracts thousands of visitors each year. The Bandows family's dedication to preserving Bavarian traditions and creating an authentic Oktoberfest experience is evident in every aspect of the festival. From the traditional German decorations to the live music and entertainment, every detail is carefully curated to transport visitors to the heart of Bavaria.
Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake has gro wn over the years and become a beloved tradition for locals and a destination for visitors seeking an unforgettable autumn experience.

Dates and Times

2023 Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake kicks off in mid-September and runs through early November, operating on the weekends. The event usually starts at noon and runs until 11:30 PM, offering a full day of fun and entertainment for all ages.

  • Saturdays & Sundays: Sept. 9–10, 16–17, 23–24, 30

October 2023
  • Friday – Sunday: Oct. 1, 6-8, 13–15, 20–22, 27–29

November 2023
  • Saturday: Nov. 4 (Closing Saturday)


Hours

  • Saturdays: 1 p.m. – 11 p.m.
  • Sundays: 12 noon – 6 p.m.
  • Fridays (October Only): 4 p.m. – 11 p.m.

Entry Time Slots for Saturdays:
  • 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • 4 p.m. – 7 p.m.
According to the Big Bear Convention Center, these time slots are your golden ticket to a swift and seamless entry into the Oktoberfest grounds and guests must arrive during their time slot. But, once you enter, you are welcome to stay until closing.

Ticketing Information

There are a variety of tickets available for this years Oktoberfest and pricing of each ticket option varies depending on the date. We will summarize the offerings according to the Big Bear Convention Center's Website:

General Admission Tickets

General admission tickets get in you in the door and does not include food or beverages. There are discounted tickets available for children and seniors. General admission ticket prices change depending on the specific day you wish to attend.

Reserved Seating

If you're looking for a guaranteed seat but don't need table service, Reserved Seating is an option. It includes admission and a designated seat at a shared table but does not include table services. You have the option of selecting indoor or outdoor seating. However, you do not receive a specific reserved seat, rather this ticket gives you access to the reserved seats. Therefore you will still have to find a seat and since seating in shared, you will most likely be sitting with other guests. Keep in mind that, to have a seat a table, you must have reserved or preferred seating, so if you want the option to sit down, be sure to select a ticket that gives you access to seats.

Preferred Seating

Preferred seating differs from reserved seating in two ways. First, preferred seats are considered to be prime locations and second include food and beverage service at your table (beverages and food cost extra). But as with Reserved Seating, this only guarantees a seat in the section, it is not a preassigned seat, so you will still need to find an available seat. As with Reserved Seating, there are indoor and outdoor options.

Uber Burgermeister Package:

According to the convention centers website, this is considered an "all-inclusive option" but we would like to point out that this package comes with the 53rd Annual One Liter Stein, your first beer, a German meal, and Preferred Seating.

Love Shacks

If you are celebrating Oktoberfest with a group of friends you might consider booking a "Love Shack." These converted vendor bungalows can accommodate up to 10 people and include cocktail and food service (cost of beverages and food are not included). Pricing for the Love Shack is an add on fee, therefore everyone in your party will be required to purchase Outdoor Preferred Seating tickets.

Sunday Family Fun Package

On Sundays, there is a family package that offers general admission for two adults and two children aged 12 and under. It also includes two free kids' meals, with meal choices including a 1/4 lb. hamburger or Dino Nuggets, served with fries and a soda/juice.
The Big Bear Convention Center warns that tickets are sold on a first come, first serve basis and may sell out so be sure to reserve tickets in advance and head to the Big Bear Convention Center website for most up to date information.

Location of the Big Bear Oktoberfest

You'll find the Oktoberfest grounds at the Big Bear Lake Convention Center, conveniently located at 42900 Big Bear Boulevard . The stunning mountain backdrop adds to the festive atmosphere, making it a unique and charming setting for the celebration.

What To Expect at Big Bear Oktoberfest


Culinary Delights:

Oktoberfest in Big Bear Lake offers a delectable array of German and Bavarian dishes, including bratwurst, sauerkraut, pretzels, schnitzel, and strudel. Food vendors are scattered throughout the venue, allowing you to sample traditional fare while enjoying the lively atmosphere.
