The Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a wildlife sanctuary and rehabilitation facility located in Big Bear Lake, California, USA. The zoo primarily focuses on the rehabilitation and care of injured, orphaned, or imprinted wild animals native to the San Bernardino Mountains.

About the Big Bear Alpine Zoo

While Big Bear offers plenty of adventure, for a truly unique experience, look beyond the slopes and towering pines to the Big Bear Alpine Zoo. But, this isn't your typical zoo. The zoo serves as a sanctuary for animals that cannot be released into the wild due to various reasons, such as permanent injuries or imprinting on humans where you can learn about the local wildlife, conservation efforts, and the challenges that native animals face.

  • Up-Close Encounters with Animals: Forget crowded exhibits with animals pacing behind bars. The Big Bear Alpine Zoo focuses on rescued and rehabilitated wildlife native to the region. Come face-to-face with majestic Bald Eagles, witness the power of a Gray Wolf, or watch a playful Black Bear lumber through its habitat.

  • Connection with Wildlife Conservation: This zoo is more than just entertainment. It's a second chance for injured animals and a sanctuary for those unable to return to the wild. Your visit directly supports their care and contributes to educational programs promoting conservation.

  • A Breath of Fresh Alpine Air: The zoo's location itself is breathtaking. Imagine crisp mountain air as you explore naturalized exhibits that mimic the animals' wild habitats. It's a refreshing escape from the usual zoo experience.

  • Perfect for All Ages: Whether you're a wildlife lover, a curious kid, or simply seeking a unique family outing, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is a fun way to spend some time while visiting Big Bear Lake.

History of the Alpine Zoo

The Big Bear Alpine Zoo was started as a place to care for animals who were injured from a wildfire in the 1950s in Big Bear Lake. After realizing that some of the animals could not be released back into the wild, it became known as the Moonridge Animal Park.

Today, the Big Bear Alpine Zoo is owned and operated by the Big Bear Valley Recreation and Park District and has continued to focus on the rehabilitation and care of injured or orphaned native wildlife and providing a sanctuary for animals that cannot be released back into the wild.
